Launching Our Outreach Worship Resource

We invite you to engage residents of nursing homes, veteran's homes, half-way houses, and other care facilities using garments of praise, ribbon praise rings, and a devotional that features prayers, monthly themes, simple Bible stories, action songs, discussion starters, traditional hymns, and prayer prompts. The King's Closet 2010 Outreach Program is available now. See ordering information at the end of the article.

Introducing the King's Closet Program

The King's Closet, a family business/ministry based in Burlington, Wisconsin, helps people launch outreach ministries to care facilities by providing resources for dynamic worship and interactive devotional time. The King's Closet Outreach Program includes two garments of praise, 10 ribbon praise rings, and a devotional booklet-one thematic service per month. People light up when they see colorful, flowing garments of praise, overlays designed to be worn over street clothes by women, men, and young people. People get arms and hands moving with ribbon praise rings that enhance worship, and people join in singing, discussion, and prayer as each devotional invites participation.

Sharing One Story

When invited to conduct a nursing-home devotional service for a local pastor, King's Closet sisters Myra and Laura, joined by Laura's daughter Hillary donned their garments of praise, grabbed their ribbon praise rings, and packed up their CD player. At the nursing home, the three women welcomed residents as aides assisted men and women with walkers and wheeled others into the meeting room. Then as Myra handed a praise ring to a woman in a wheelchair, the person next to the woman told Myra, "You don't need to give her one. She's blind." Nevertheless, Myra continued, "This ring has bright yellow ribbons. You can wave it along with the music." When the woman took the ring, she began stroking the ribbons. Then Laura introduced herself and told about her garment of praise which was called "Parting of the Sea", with its wide bands of aqua turquoise and sandy browns. She told how its name was inspired by the Exodus story. The Lord made a way for Moses and the Israelites to escape from Pharaoh's army by walking through the Red Sea on dry land. Laura added that God had often "parted the sea" in her life. Then Myra and Hillary briefly shared about their garments.

People waved their colorful ribbon praise rings while singing Bible songs like "Jesus Loves Me" and "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam." When invited to recite Psalm 23, most folks joined in, recalling the word of God planted in their hearts so long ago. Praying the Lord's Prayer aloud blessed people not only in hearing but also in speaking God's word. During intercessory prayer, people offered petitions. Concluding the service, all three leaders offered hugs as they collected the ribbon praise rings. Myra asked the woman who had taken the yellow ribbon praise ring if she would like a hug, and she responded, "You bet I would."

Customizing Your Outreach Program

Whether you plan an outreach every week, once a month, or only four or five times a year, you can customize the King's Closet Outreach Program to meet your needs. For example, in a weekly program, stretch the Bible story by sharing background material the first week. Retell the story using a slightly different focus each week. Or, try adding drama by giving people speaking roles or by sharing part of the story each week, always reviewing the previous week or weeks. Add your own stories to illustrate the Bible story. Of course, you can always sing additional songs your people know and love. On the other hand, if your time is limited or you meet less often, use the basic service format and choose the options that work best for your schedule and your people.
